Action-filled novel shines light on dark corners of the Vatican

Mexico’s bestselling conspiracy author, Leopoldo Mendívil López, has done it again – with a new novel that takes us away from Mexican-American history and into the entrails of the Vatican catacombs. And, for the first time, this book, Vatican Secret, will be appearing in English, to be published by Penguin Random House Group. It has been (or is being) translated into Italian. Mendívil explores the labyrinth of little-known and long-suppressed events that have been an integral part of papal intrigue since the days of the Roman Emperor Constantine in the fourth century – and even before. The main focus of Vatican Secret is on more recent events surrounding the opaque activities of the Vatican Bank, and his narrative takes us from the bank’s founding by Pope Pius XII in 1942 right into the Papacy of Francisco I. It featuresdocumented but little-known activities of the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency and the mysterious Masonic Lodge P-2, which are determined to maintain bank secrecy in the face of pressures from several popes, and increasingly from around the world to combat money laundering by making all banks more transparent. Mendívil shows us that the bank’s activities were – and are – a secret to which even popes donot have access. We learn about these activities and events through the eyes of a humble and naive Mexican priest, Pio del Rosario, who, like Dan Brown’s Robert Langdon in The Da Vince Code, is buffeted and severely and unremittingly threatened by forces beyond his control and beyond his understanding, as he stumbles toward the truth. This provides the fast-moving framework around which the various conspiracies are revealed. Mendívil tells us, “Operation Gladio, despite its fictional and entertaining depiction in the movie Godfather III, was absolutely real, as was the Masonic Lodge. The Vatican Bank, and the Vatican itself, in a broad sense, was a ‘forced tool’, exploited by the United States intelligence community as a ‘shielded financial pipeline’ to conduct and finance covert activities, such as terrorist attacks in European cities, carried out by CIA-trained agents that pretended to act as left-wing agitators. The Masonic Lodge P-2 played the critical role of ‘organizing entity’, recruiting heads of the European intelligence institutions, and of the national governments and of the Church itself, having no less than two Vatican Secretaries of State – the men second in power below the Pope himself – as Freemasons, members of this ‘non-regular’ lodge. Even the Italian Mafia had a role.” And, he adds, “Pope John Paul I was killed for looking into this cobweb. Pope Benedict XVI, three decades later, was forced to resign – as “Vatican Secret reveals – because of a Vatican Bank investigation, and because of Benedict’s attempt to modify the Bank’s statutes.” It gets even more complicated. The events are driven in part by the End of Times apocalypse prophesy described in the Book of Revelation (supposedly written by Jesus’ disciple John, but which Mendívil shows was forged), and by a set of prophesies known as the Three Secrets of Fatima –reportedly revealed to three child shepherds in Fatima, Portugal, in 1917. This is not Mendívil’s first foray into the world of dark conspiracies and little-known events. Other books he has written, available in Spanish, include Secreto 1910 – the U.S. Financing of the Mexican Revolution; Secreto 1929 –the “American intervention to create the ruling political system in Mexico during the 20th Century”; and “Secreto-R” – the power of the Rockefeller family behind the creation of the modern world hegemony. To prepare for his latest work, Mendívil has accessed a long list of references, books and documents that buttress the presentation of events in this fast-paced novel. As he states in the Foreward, “Vatican Secret is a mystery novel based on a real problem in the world. The plot is real. The events and the persons depicted in Vatican Secret are, in general, real. Some are fictitious, and have been placed in the plotline to guide the reader through this world of tunnels unknown to most people – the assassination of Pope John Paul I; the attempts on the life of John Paul II; the death threats against Benedict XVI and his resignation from the papacy; the enigma of the appearances of Fatima; the secret operations of the Vatican Bank and their role in destabilizing the world; the true origin of the Gospel and of the Church and the group of Catholics who are against the new Pope.” Retired Italian Congressman Agostino Spataro has written, “I have finished Reading ‘Vatican Secret’ by the Mexican writer Leopoldo Mendívil López, who supports , and, in his way, proves, the theory that the Book of Revelations (by John) was forged, just as the ‘third secret of Fatima’ has been manipulated.” The politician and journalist adds, “The book is so shocking that I have let myself rename it: ‘Sant Apostasia’ – Holy Apostasy-. I recommend it.”
